In one of my shooting escapades, I was greeted by one cat in a park... I actually did not notice the cat until suddenly it seems to strike a pose for me.

I really dunno. But I guess some of the shots seems to be unique and would be worth sharing...

Happened one lazy Friday afternoon at a park in town, near the Perot Post Office. It is also close to the library and Bermuda's historical society museum.

there was this petite looking girl

so simple with a nice smile

surrounded by a group of friends

I thought, what is so special about this girl?

how come I cannot stop glancing,

short of staring at her?

At that time, I consider myself as naive

confused with what I feel

But definitely sure that at that moment

a fine sweet day in the midst of that year

that this person is very special

The special feeling within me was nurtured

Into friendship and evolved

Of Fish and Seaweeds

Swimming is now more interesting as we discovered a treasure of edible seaweed near one of my favorite swimming spots in the island.

My father who was from the west coast portion of the Philippines introduced us to this edible seaweed called ar-arusip or lato in Filipino.

This particular seaweed is best served with tomato, onion, shrimp paste (alamang) and mango.

Friday Night Out

Just a couple of days after posting the previous blog regarding my social life in the island... My roommate and I went for a night out in town.

We hopped from one bar to another. There, we saw old acquaintances and met new friends as well.

Then, there was a photog of the only daily newspaper in the island, the Royal Gazette. He shoots here and there, covering the island's night life. Taking our photos individually and as a group he told us that there is a possibility that the photos will end up in the newspaper and the website bermynet.com.

And alas! Our group's photo became the biggest and the center image of the page in the Lifestyle Section of the paper, entitled Royal Gallery, Friday Night Out.

It also became the banner image for that particular day's FNO of the website bermynet.com. Probably the varying nationalities - British, American, Filipino, Dominican and Lithuanian - in the same photo gets the interest of the people behind the paper and the site. (Plus, of course the happy faces and the two bottles of beers in my hand)

Well, now, that sums up my previous week's lack of social life... not!

I have not been posting anything on my blog for the recent months. Two or three moths to be more a little precise. But things had been busy. Maybe because of the different social functions that I have to go to.

It is now exactly one in the morning of wednesday, May 19th. I just shared a dinner and few drinks with some of my old and new friends in the island. One way of coping up with the stress... brought by work and homesickness.. Living most of our livea away from the family.

Yes, when reality strikes.. and reality bites, I know or and am sure that the reasons why I got a very healthy social network in this island - a vast set of friends of different nationalities, of different cultures...

... is my way of coping up of living away from the most important people of my life... MY FAMILY.

Sometimes, other folks may find it silly. I got too much social events going on. True. To the fact that I cannot attend to its demands most of the time. However, I still am trying to make sure to be there in the very important social occasions. At times, or should I say, most of the time though, what is essential and relevant is subjective. Hence, the differences in our opinions. And in my part, the root of slight arguments over which or who and what is more important than the other.

Well, I still find it more interesting that the various social networks feels that the personal presence is essential. So, if an individual's presence is considered important in a gathering, therefore that individual has a very interesting, or should I say, intriguing and acceptable behavior in that group... be it of the same or of varying cultures.

This post is dedicated to that very healthy social networks that have accepted me as an individual. I feel blessed for having the gift of learning and appreciating our differences and similarities along the way

As I walk on its main street (Front Street), often John Mayer's song Neon comes to mind. I dunno, but I somehow relate the song with the way I feel as I while away time whether alone or not.

Of course, I always have my camera with me.

I took the photo below aboard a ferry boat from a 'tour' to dockyard.

Cruise ships docked along the bay of Front Street is a common view especially during summer season.

A Visit to Fort Scaur, Bermuda

Fort Scaur was a big deal for a long time, to the British and to the American military, but it's now a wonderful place to spend an afternoon walk or picnic. There are 22 acres of gardens to see and stroll, and a hefty climb up to the Early Bermuda Weather Stone with its cutesy inscription.

On a clear day, it provides a view of the entire island of Bermuda, from east to west.

Also known as Scaur Hill Fort, this old historical slice of land was important to the British who, after the American Civil war, feared the US would invade Bermuda. At that time in history, Bermuda was a centrally-

located pivot point of British Colonial power in the New World, and Fort Scaur

was heavily armed and fortified for this reason. Scaur Hill Fort was the grand master of forts in

Bermuda, with most of the British fortifying funds in

the 1800's going into this particular fort. It's situated high up on a hill and was used from 1870 to

World War II, when American troops from the 52nd Coast Artillery Battalion were stationed there. Back in its early days,

Fort Scaur was equipped with enormous cannons that were mounted on recoiling platforms.

The guns are gone now, but visitors can walk along the gallery and look out the windows where the cannons once were housed.

A Day At The City of Hamilton

One sunny afternoon, I brought my camera and wandered around 'town' as it is popularly called here. Well, the town is actually the city of Hamilton - the capital of Bermuda (I hope this is right, hehehe!) and hosts most government and administrative offices in the island.

Aside from being a good tourist spot, having the most shopping venues, this part of town is also the center of entertainment as it has my favorite bars and pubs and my only favorite movie theatre.

Fortunately, this is where I work just like more than half of the island's inhabitants. Sometimes, during my lunch break, I just walk around town to while away time.

Based on its site, the city is presently 185 acres in size, substantially more than when first established but still one of the smallest cities in the world.

A trip around town is really worth it as I observe how people interacts and greets each other along the way... a diverse set of people in terms of culture and race...

see how people break traffic rules, whether on foot or while driving vehicles... and how it also has problems of homeless people just like any other cities...

and how the city has maintained very nice and truly reinvigorating parks within... or how I got stuck in traffic during rush hours.

The city of Hamilton, a truly unique experience to be a part of.

September forever changed...

September 2009 to be exact.

My siblings and I became orphans, officially that month. My father passed away last year and mom did this September. Now, we are orphans.

It hurts. There is pain. But that is the truth. We are orphans.

I know it is a normal feeling after the loss - the pain... the emptiness... there's always this lump in my throat... what feels like a dagger in my heart. They may see me smiling as I promised to offer my mother to send her my smile to her grave. But it really really hurts.

September we buried our mother. On the same location where we buried our father last year. Now they are together. Now their sufferings and worries are over and I am glad about that.

But...

September really made me feel the heat bursting from my eyes. Like a a dragon breath, waiting to burst at any moment.

Especially when I remember the lessons learned from both my parents. Lessons that are sometimes unique to me... Or I interpret in a different way, making them little life's values that are especially meant to guide me. Values that I consider helped molding who I am and still makes me a better person.

Most people believe or perceive that I am strong. I do believe I am. I have been through different challenges and struggles of life and I never give up. I always give a good fight. And yes, I am strong.

But...

Since September,

I am feeling the loss.

I am feeling the pain.

I am feeling the emptiness....

. . . . . No matter how strong I am.

Recently visited two caves in the island during one of the island's holidays.

The rock formations are so amazing, so breath-taking.

It is forbidden to touch any of the stalactites, stalagmites, helectites or any of the 'living' rock formations since they are still growing and forming.

In about a century, this stalactite and stalagmite will be joined, forming a 'column.' The tour guide said he will get our numbers so he can call us and invite us to visit again when these two become one.

The area is about 12 minutes away from where I live. Everything is so near in this island!

Very ideal for snorkeling.

A lot of small colorful fishes near the edge and rock creases. Some swim right between your legs!

And a lot of tourists as well!

A visit to the island won't be complete without a trip to this amazing beach.

Take a look at what's inside the crayon box.

The houses in Bermuda will compete in terms of variety in color... Plus most of them are pastel colored!

I lived in a pink house and am

currently in a peach one.

I find it funny at times that when people ask about where you live... you only not say the street and house number which is usual in any parts of the world... In Bermuda, we can also describe the house by its given name and, of course, its color!

The roofs are all white. This is used to catch rainwater and stored in tanks. So it is necessary to have roofs that are whitewashed and

maintained clean all the time. (I'm not so sure, but Bermuda does not have fresh water, aside from the one that comes from up above.)

Tall Ships in Bermuda

One of the highlights in the celebration of Bermuda's 400 years of permanent settlement is the arrival of tall ships - from the "Atlantic Challenge 2009" that began in Vigo, Spain. This race has a lot of port calls (or stop overs? hehehe!) and one of them is this island. This challenge will end in Belfast, Northern Ireland - a true race around the Atlantic.

The tall ships provided a different kind of excitement compared to the usual festivities and street parties. Plus, the ships docked in the city actually changed the landscape of the capital for a week. There were various events that has relevance to sea navigation and... we were allowed to get inside the ships!

One of my favorites is the HMS Bounty,

which was built in Nova Scotia for MGM Film Studio's

1962 movie, Mutiny on the Bounty which stars Marlon Brando.

Based on their flyer, it is designed as amovie prop and a sound stage. The ship has extensive decks, long hallways and eight-foot ceilings. Her first journey out of the shipyard was to Tahiti and her second was to England to promote the movie.

Some of the other ships were

interesting as well. Of course, there are endless, endless lengths of ropes all round. Well, it's for their sails, what else? Other ships that are a part of the race and the festivities include

The Bounty, Eagle, Pride of Baltimore, Fasizi, Virginia, Spirit of Carolina and Amistad from USA

Kruzenshtern from Russia

And even if small, Bermuda has its own tall ship called the "Spirit of Bermuda." (Shown above, second photo from the top)

With a couple of friends, we watched the unberthing of ships from Hamilton. They are now on their way to another port. It's like

another festivity. A lot of tourists witnessed the event. Canons were fired by some of the ships. One of the ship even had tis crews get up the sails... And stood there on the ropes! whew!

I hope they will have a safe and fun trip until the end of the race.

The Bermuda Day Parade (Parte Dois)

The Filipino float and dancers were one of the best.. Well, not only because I was wearing a shirt that is Philippine flag inspired. hats off to the organizers and dancers, particularly to the AFB or Association of Filipinos in Bermuda. Come to think of it, I am not a registered member! Hahaha!

I did hang out with most of my Filipino friends from our store and from the (only) hospital here.

The only day when you can drink beer/alcohol on the street, so we grabbed the opportunity and did our stuff!

Back to the event, the parade of floats and representatives of different countries were all inspiring and informative. never I thought that there were Mohawk Indian tribes somewhere in Bermuda (far up north?). Since the main streets in the city is closed, umbrellas and even gazebos are lined up on the street. It's like having a grand picnic and party!

The parade includes famous persons and organizations and of course a representation of different cultures and nationalities. Floats and costumes galore!

I loved how the Portuguese made their parade with arc similar to a flores de mayo of the Philippines. Well, our country has been 'discovered' by a Portuguese Magellan so, it is not impossible to think that our traditions, culture and language are influenced by this people. Fact is, I really get along with most Portuguese I bumped into, and might as well make friends with them as I study their language.

Representing my parish

There's a lot of other nations and nationalities who joined the parade. Needless to say that during the event, I may have bumped into 20 or more people of different countries. Just bumped, while holding my beer and camera. But one thing for sure, I am so glad to have witnessed this still on-going celebration of the 400th year discovery of Bermuda.

Here's an excerpt from the government's article about the reason for the celebration:

"In 1609 the Sea Venture, flagship of the second expedition sent to America by the Virginia Company of London under the command of Admiral Sir George Somers was wrecked off Bermuda during a violent storm (providing the theme of Shakespeare’s Tempest). The subsequent rescue a year later of the Jamestown colony in Virginia by its survivors is one of the important stories of the western world. Bermuda played a crucial role in the development of the New World. Over the past four centuries, Bermuda has evolved into a diverse multi-ethnic and multi-cultural community.

This anniversary gives the opportunity to honour and showcase the Bermuda people, the culture, and the events that have helped to build Bermuda over the past 400 years and make it what it is today. We can acknowledge and celebrate the journey"

A House name? Yes, I observed that Bermuda houses has names or aliases that sets it aside from the rest.

Well, of course, aside from the usual house and street names.

The house names are usually placed near the house number. Painted in various materials such as wood, metal, tiles or ceramics and even carved in wood.

Some names are quite serious and formal in

nature while the others are seriously funny.

(It took me a great deal taking these photos since I have to stop on the road whenever I saw an interesting name. Often, I have to go back the next day or take the shot after work.)

Dawdling over lunch break, thinking of my family, I came up with this draft of a poem dedicated to my wife, my mom, mom-in-law and those who served as my mother outside my real home or country. And this also goes to all the mothers in the world....

Mother's Day

. . . is the day when they planned to raise a family

. . . is the day when we were conceived

. . . is the day when we first gasped for air and see the light

. . . is the day when we were nurtured by their milk, their loving hands

. . . is the day when they sang to lull us to sleep

. . . is the day when we first smiled, giggled or uttered the word 'mama' or 'nana'

Harbour Night

Every Wednesday during the summer

months, Front Street in Hamilton transforms into a big fiesta cum party scene!

From around 6 Pm to midnight, Hamilton's main street is closed to vehicular traffic to give way to the celebration which is comparable to a fiesta in the Philippines.

There are tents and canopies decorated with lights and other stuffs - selling food, shell crafts, tribal necklaces and crafts, artworks and of course - food! (Like tiangge)

There's street dancing, bands and even a solo performer - A Pinoy!!! (The street dancing is almost similar to ati-atihan.) Bar scenes along the beach is also alive and waiting for guests... Even retail shops that usually closes either 5 or 6 in the afternoon extends their operating hours.

It is a worthwhile experience and a good immersion activity into the Bermudian way of life as they celebrate their 400th founding anniversary.

My Daughter is now thirteen

May 6 marked my only daughter's thirteenth birthday. I remember, I was in the Philippines last year to celebrate her day. Now, I am away once again.

Nothing to do but think of her and the rest of my family during my lunch break, I scribbled this little piece for her:

Mirror, Mirror on the road

who's the fairest of 'em all?

Pocahontas, John Smith and I

I never thought that Bermuda is somewhat connected to Pocahontas. And exactly where I now live is named after her boyfriend (I live in Smith's Parish)? And one of the beaches that I frequent, is called John Smith Bay.

Now, now... how did this happen?

Here's what I grabbed from my research:

The most popular tale is that Pocahontas, as a child, saved John Smith’s life after he was captured by the Powhatan. (The Powhatan is the tribe, I think, which is also the name of Pocahontas' father.) According to John Smith’s account he was laid across a stone and just as he was to be executed Pocahontas threw herself across his body. Many scholars believe that this ‘execution’ was actually a ritual misunderstood by Smith.

In either case, Pocahontas and John Smith became friends and she visited him at the Fort often. Smith says that Pocahontas saved the people at the Fort from starvation by bringing them provisions. This friendship lead to the romantic tales of Pocahontas and John Smith which continue to this day; with many people wrongly believing that they were once married.

And about the beach...

John Smith’s Bay is the only public beach in Smith’s Parish. It is named after Captain John Smith who produced a map of Bermuda in 1631, despite never having set foot on the island. The captain was one of the early English colonists in Virginia and was saved by Pocahontas. Interestingly, Pocahontas went on to marry John Rolfe who was one of the men aboard Sir George Somers’ shipwrecked Sea Venture.

The bay is not near any major hotels so is not very well known to tourists. Locals love it though, I visit the bay as often as I can - sometimes twice a week. The beach is long and wide with crystal clear water. The water is shallow and good for children. The reef lies about 200 meters from the beach but it’s not necessary to snorkel this far to see the wonderful marine life. John Smith’s Bay occasionally experiences rip currents.

I find it peaceful to be at the beach before the sun sets. Bringing my camera and sometimes my sketch pad - along with my kids' coloring which I brought all the way from the Philippines.

Well, now I know, Pocahontas and I have something in common.... we both like John Smith : for her the person... me, the bay, named after the person.

Celebrating the Lenten Season, particularly the Good Friday is soooooo different in Bermuda if compared to my home country. In the Philippines, Holy Week is one of the solemnly observed faith-based celebration. Being a predominantly Christian

country,

and resurrection of Jesus Christ means a lot to us Filipinos.

is interesting to note that various provinces and cities have different ways of observing the Lenten season, but what is essential is in

the Philippines, it means we

try to sacrifice something that is important to us. Some people fast, do not eat meat, give up vices, go to church daily or

pray novena daily, or anything that will serve as sharing the sacrifice of the savior. There are places in the Philippines where we can

still see flagellation and some ac

tual nailing to the cross. Oh, I almost failed to mention the singing in the church we call pasyon - it's like the whole new testament rewritten in rhymes and sang in various tunes.

In Bermuda, it is a different story. Although the island has the most Christian churches (per square area) in the world, it is surprising how they celebrate the lent. It's like making a hundred and eighty, as

people gets ready and are excited for the holiday. It is almost comparable

to Christmas. The days prior to Good Friday

is a very busy day - for shopping, buying food, liquors and all items necessary for the fiesta atmosphere of Good Friday. In the morning, they eat hot cross buns and salted fillet cod fish as breakfast as their tradition. Good Friday

also means kite festival for them. People go to parks, beaches, go yachting, fishing, or just party at home.

Now, the Filipinos here who are mostly contract workers, are now kinda influenced by the way Bermudians celebrate the lent. We are known to be adaptable, adjustable. Although it was still hard to get away from having some small sacrifices - it runs in our DNA. But we still went to park or beaches, have picnic or party of sort.

Well, no matter how things are done or celebrated, the important thing is remembering the sacrifices of the Lord. And looking forward for

His resurrection - which completed the man's journey to salvation after giving His life to the cross.

What I know is I love the rythm,

the beat and how it is sang.

Probably, it has something to do with my love of nature, especially the waters. I just liked the song and grew up hearing it from time to time.

I am already in one of the

And I still like it. It's like how I enjoy the beach, the province and the nature in general as I mature.

A menagerie of mixed feelings as I breathe in the captivating view of the island - on my way to work,

Even if I am physically tired from a long day's work, I still find time to

stop at some of my (now) favorite spots by the beach or park. Well, usually parks are along the beaches anyway.

Just watching the waves hit the island soothes away all the pressures and gets me ready for another day of challenges.

I am so thankful for the blessing .. of having this wonderful scenic spots in my daily life.

As I am awed by this great creation, I took the opportunity to take some photos to share. And I hope readers of this blog will like it.

The Province

It is actually my desktop image, particularly the one that shows the rice field, bamboo trees and the clear blue sky. The photo was taken while I was on my way to the airport, once again leaving the country for a job opportunity.

Oh how miss the simple life in the province. Where else can you ask a neighbor to pick malunggay (horse radish) fruit or leaves, straight from the tree? Fruit trees are mostly given away as well. Mangoes, kamias and sampalok. If you ran out of cooking oil or tomato while cooking, ask some from your neighbor! That's how cool people are in giving or lending to their neighbors.

In the province, no one could hardly keep a secret. Most of the people knows everybody. A newcomer is definitely noticed but won't be given a hard time becoming a part of the society. It is a personal experience and joy to have known most of the vendors in our little town. If you do not know what happened last night, go to your neighbor or my favorite vendors and they'll surely keep you posted.

The province also served as my respite in the jungle of the city where I used to work. At this time though, being half the planet away from my province, I foresee that I can only visit the province once a year. Good thing that my new work environment, the island, is somewhat laid back, similar to the province life. Plus the nice sceneries... I think I am lucky to earn a living in an environment that I appreciate and enjoy (and the kind of work that I prefer). Someone up above must love me that much! hehehe! Blessed should be the right word, instead of lucky.

This island, my new place still reminds me of my home province. Not only my desktop or my screen saver. There are times that certain portions or areas in the island connects me to my province.

Windy Bermuda

The months of January and February are kinda cold here in the island. March is still chilly. Coming from a tropical country, the temperature that is 25 degrees Celsius or below only means one thing - it is cold. We need to wear jackets and, as I often see with my fellow kababayans (countrymen), even thick winter clothes are acceptable. Well, riding the bike on a cold windy day is no joke. Plus, it also rains (most of the time)! What more can you ask for?

Well, windy or not, I still appreciate Bermuda. The way the island's weather changes within the day is something that we have to get used to. You sometimes get all four seasons in one day. You go to work on a chilly morning wind, then take lunch enjoying the clear blue skies and warm sunshine, go home in the late afternoon or evening on full battle (rain) gear!

Some (or most) of my videos here are taken on a windy day. The island's beauty is still breath- taking despite the weather... at one time i almost got wet, taking photos and videos by the beach due to the whisks of water brought by the wind.

I am also fascinated by birds around here. Often, I wake up hearing the birds singing on a nearby tree. The one I got here was taken when I was parking my bike near our apartment. It's not the best shot, but at least, try to check the birds.

Promdi Pinoy ... Is Now An Islander

I left the Philippines for a job opportunity in an island... Bermuda. This is also the reason why during the course of travel and adjustment to the new place, I was not able to post new blogs.

Promdi Pinoy is still a promdi... you can take him out of the province, but you cannot take the province out of him.

Watch out for the new experiences and adventures of Promdi Pinoy who is now an islander, an islander from the province. Come to think of it, I am also an official OFW now, huh? (Overseas Filipino Worker - the best export products of the Philippines.)

The Yummy Pako!

Pako is fern in english. Pako, pronounced slower in Tagalog is nail. No, we do not eat iron nails here in our province. We eat the river fern or pako found mostly beside bodies of fresh water. (Most people know the ornamental fern used in flower arrangements.)

In our public market, I see pako being sold once in a while. Way back in my teenage years while vacationing in Guagua, Pampanga, I remember gathering pako by the bank of the sapa or creek.

This pako is a regional delicacy I have learned to eat when I was young (I remember my father telling me when I was a kid that I can live in the mountains coz I eat wild/exotic plants). Popular in some regions, but not quite known in some. Whenever I see the pako being sold nowadays, I make sure I buy some and prepare on of my best green salads!

Pako or river fern salad with tomatoes, onion and salted eggs. Smoked fish flakes are optional, but highly recommended.

But I am sure these are edible... and here is how I prepare the.... (drumrolls please!)

Exciting Fern Salad!

very simple steps:

1. Dice onion and tomatoes

2. Mix with red (salted eggs)

3. Add Tinapa or smoked fish flakes (you can etiher buy the falked tinapa or buy a tinapa, fry it first before removing the scales, the bones then flake the meat into small pieces.)

4. Blanch the fern tops ( blanch the leaves really briefly with hot water)

5. Squeeze calamansi juice (or lemon juice)

6. Mix all ingredients.. Serve!

Vinegar and garlic mix (ala vinaigrette) can also be used for this salad!!

Well, it is of course best served with rice and....crackling liempo (crispy fried pork belly with ribs!) Whoaaa!

The Fern plant we have here is fiddlehead or ostrich fern. The leaves really look like big ostrich feather when full grown and like the violin's fiddlehead when young and curled.

Ostrich FernFamily: PolypodiaceaePteretis pensylvanica or Matteuccia struthiopteris

Fiddleheads are young, edible, fern shoots that are gathered when they are still curled. They

are very similar in shape to the head of a violin, hence their name. These vegetables are gathered in the spring when they are still tightly curled and between 4 and 6 inches high. This period last for about 15 days between mid-April and early July, depending on the region.

Ostrich Fern look like big feather-like leaves growing out of the ground. Also look for the fiddleheads of the fern, which are small sprouts of fern that curl up tightly at the tops. Eventually, the fiddlehead will unravel into the more identifiable feather-looking plants.Leaves: The leaves of Fern are called fronds. There are two types of fronds, one that is sterile that are dark green and "plume like" and another that is fertile, which is dark brown and resembles dark brown feathers.Habitat: Rich, moist, or wet soil by streams, rivers, edges of swamps, and open woods.Location: Some Ostrich Fern grow at the low parts of Sachar Woods, where rain collects and sometimes forms a stream. While still tightly curled and under 15 cm (6 inches), the Ostrich Fern is good in salad or as asparagus.

To Market, To Market!

This is our public market in the province - locally called Palengke or Pamilihang Bayan. Active on Tuesdays, Thursdays and Saturdays.

So, we do our marketing only on those days to buy fresh produce, fish, meat and poultry. People from nearby barrios also go to the poblacion or town proper, where the public market is situated during market days. Some of the barrio people go here to sell their produce as well (usually backyard produce).

I already have my suki or patrons that I frequent most of the time. being a fan of vegetables and fruits, some of them already know what i Like. If i missed visiting them for, say a week, my suki will say "How come you did not buy from me this week?". Some of them even know me by name.

Haggling or Tawad is also one of the games of the trade. You can ask for discounts aropund 5% to 10% of their selling price. Often, ask for additional or dagdag after the purchase. If you have 10 pieces of tomato for five pesos, ask for another piece. Or just round of to the nearest tens the total purchase... Say, if total purchase is 85, ask for tawad of 5 pesos so you pay only P80!

In general, I find it fun to visit our my favorite vendors during market days. You bump into people you know eons ago... Sort of having a reunion. "Oh hi Ma'am Martin, I thought you were in Canada? Having a vacation?" At times, I hear "How come you did not attend the aerobics last night?" or "Did you hear about Mang Tacio's daughter?"

You will also hear the latest gossips and events in town... from exercise, to accidents to reasons why there is no electricity. Well, I have not heard them discuss about Obama though! They are more concerned about prices in gasoline, LPG's and basic commodities.

In the Philippines, try to visit the local public market. It is so different from malls and supermarkets. Try to appreciate the difference and explore our culture.

Well, come to think of it, one of our nursery rhymes is about the market. I think I have forgotten some portions of the song now that I am doing the real trip to the market myself.

Secret Garden Part 2

A Resort By the Mountain

Finally, there is a newly developed resort by the foot of Sierra Madre Mountains.

The resort is called Stone 8. We have visited this a couple of times. The water is so cool, coming from the mountains. It is very near the Dupinga river, so most probably they have the same source of water.

From our part of town, it takes us around thirty minutes to get there. From the main city, it is about an hour and a half.There are breathe-taking views of mountains and hills along the way.

I saw the old bus that goes to the east coast of Luzon, Dingalan.

I also saw some farmers along the way. And carabaos , too.

At the resort, there are pools for adults and kids. slides. Fish ponds.

Of course, what is a Filipino vacation party without the videoke? Yes, we can sing our hearts out right here in this resort. I have belted a couple of songs during a relative's birthday bash here and a friend's vacation who came from Australia.

But the water, although really cold is so inviting. Very natural. No chlorine since it is free flowing, so water is replaced regularly...

From time to time, there are vendors of native delicacies and bananas that visits our kubo (nipa hut). Often, in our visits here, we buy the bananas offered so cheap in the resort.

Now, a trip to to this part of north eastern Luzon near the Sierra Madre Mountains will only be complete after a visit to this nice resort.

Paminto

I have learned a new Tagalog word through careful listening and...

drinking with my relatives and close friends!

We were having a blast drinking local strong beer (aka red horse) and has discussed heck a lot of topics from the sun and space to Obama. I missed the local beer and did not bother to open the gift of vodka from my brother-in-law.

Our drinking forum subjects were so diverse, I cannot understand what the other half of the group is saying anymore. (For me this is one good element of alcohol, it opens up the mind and makes other people talk.)

Most of the topics evolved around relationships. I gave them some lecture about the application of strategies, based on Sun Tzu's Art of War, whenever there is a discussion between them and their wives. It was so funny, realizing that there are strategies to be learned and applied not only in business but also in relationships. I just hope my other brother in law will be careful next time in handling marital arguments involving his controversial mobile phone.

Our lively discussions were suddenly halted when my sister handed over a packed pancit (noodles) to a drinking buddy, my high school friend drinking right beside me.

Holding the packed food, He immediately commented "Ah, ok na itong paminto!" (This is an acceptable paminto)

I asked, "What does paminto mean?

It turned out that the word is combination of Tagalog prefix pam or pang which means for, or to be used to. And the word pinto - which means door or opening. Hence, literally, paminto means, an item which will be used in a door.

"Why do you consider this food as paminto? Use it in your door?"

"No. This will be the best proof of your alibi, so your wife will open the doors for you!"

"Ahhh.. So it is not just putot (or take-home food). It will also serve as the key to open the door and show your wife that you really came from a legit occasion!"

And since my good friend (since elementary days) has a valid reason to drink, plus the paminto, he does not have to worry going home late that night!

That's another strategy for drinking husbands!

Ahhh... Now, I know... And will advise my fellow drinking buddies: Everytime there is an occassion to drink, and your wife is not a part of the group... Make sure to bring a paminto with you.

It is the key to your homes... a key to blissful marriage! hehehe!

A River That Runs Through . . .

. . .Our Town.

I visited the river or ILOG in Tagalog, that runs on the North-Eastern part of our province. It connects to the Pampanga River and a small portion is called Daus River. There is also a resort near the mountain, taking advantage of the view and the waters that nature offers.

It was late afternoon when I visited the river. So refreshing...the cool breeze that touched my skin. I walked, skipped, hoped along the river banks... on the stones.. some with moss and a bit slippery. The water here ius a bit cold. (I have taken a bath here a couple of times, along with the carabaos.. hehehe)

The river is surrounded by hills. And glancing to the east, the great Sierra Madre Mountain Range can be seen where the water comes from.

I saw some carabaos being bathed by their owners. Kalabaw is the national animal of the Philippines - the farmers' best friend. Near the river, there are farms of vegetables and mostly of palay (rice) and onion. Agriculture, being the main source of income of most of my provincemates, the river really helpd them a lot.

The modern world has also taken its toll in the province. I am surprised to see a plastic trash - one that I can trace to have come from supermarket in Metro Manila which is 5 hours away sans traffic. There are also other garbages in the river, but not really that much. I hope, the local government and the public will be more concerned and help clean this river.

As the sun starts to set, there were farmers crossing the river. Walking. Traversing the water current. On their head, they carry produce or whatever items they got that they avoid getting wet.

Some farmers are already on my side of the river, but came from the far east side. I saw them walking in groups towards town. Next thing I knew, some of them are already watching me taking photos of the river and the sunset. Most are their kids watching me.

I heard someone say "Ang ganda! Ang ganda pala!" meaning, it's beautiful, surprisingly beautiful.

That time, I realized that maybe they were amazed by its beauty only because they have not stopped... paused... in order to appreciate their environment. Farmers are known hard workers. I am just glad to have sort of shown them the nice view of their workplace... of the river ... of the farm.

For some people, it is just a river. For some, it helps them water their farm.

For others, it could be a place to dump their trash.

For some, it helps them clean themselves... it also helps clean their animals. ...

It is just a river... that has different meanings to us province dwellers.

Feast of Sto. Niño

Our province recently held a religious procession in honor of the Sto. Niño, the child image of Jesus Christ.

It is almost similar (or patterned) to the way Cebuanos celebrated the feast by having the Sinulog Festival. A famous parade and street dances in honor of the child Jesus. Santo Niño is the oldest religious image that reached the Philippine soil. A wooden image was brought by Ferdinand Magellan in 1521 and was presented as a baptismal gift to Queen Juana

During the Holy Mass, I have learned that the Philippines is the only country (tolerated?) that has this kind of feast and approved by the Holy See.

"Just remember that this Holy Child grew to become the adult Jesus Christ, who died on the cross to save us from our sins", the Parish Priest reminded his flock during his sermon, as he invited everyone to join the procession.

In my almost two decades of embracing life in this part of the province, I think this is the first time we held a colorful parade for the young Jesus. A lot of people joined the procession with each barrio or barangay having representatives. There were various images in different clothes, most are in greens and reds.

Aside from the religious images, there were also a lot of children that were dressed the same as the Holy Child. The parents and guardians beside their children. The children are so cute waving their hands... and the fun part of it is that some of them are giving away goodies - candies, pop corn and stuffs to the watchers.

There were brass bands, ati-atihan dancers, female dancers in native moslems costumes (of Southern Philippines) similar to singkil and some people in green shirt printed with "Viva Sto. Niño!" People of all ages are present - from the young children, to teen agers to the lolas (grannies). As I was taking photos, I thought I bumped into a young lad - to my surprise, he turned out to be our young parish priest! :)

I find it interesting the various types of vehicles used to carry the religious images depicting the young Jesus. There were small battery-operated toy cars, tricycles, bicycles with sidecars (still a tricycle?) , passenger type jeepneys, owner-type jeepneys, SUV's and the pugpug or hand tractor. I was waiting for the carabao or cow with cart... But it's a no-show.

I find the parade fun and worthwhile. It shows how the town people cooperates with one another and how venerates the Savior. I also observe a lot of them having fun during the parade, greeting people as they pass by and seemingly not minding their exhaustion.

The colorful procession - the dances, the trimmings and the entire pageantry is just the Filipino's way of expressing how important the Young Jesus is in our lives.

I am glad and am proud for having this tradition, finally, in our town!

My secret garden is not really that secret

On my netsurfing activities, I came across this site where you answer some questions and your element will be revealed. It also has other information about energies, colors, etc. regarding personalities.

I find it fun and worth sharing. Maybe, as a Filipino my interest in this element thingies is a part of my Chinese influences - astrologies, geomancies, etc.
